Varnish Indicator is a Google Chrome extension that helps users identify whether a webpage is being served from a Varnish cache and whether the cached response is fresh.

2. How the Extension Works

When a user clicks the Varnish Indicator extension icon, the extension temporarily accesses the currently active browser tab to inspect HTTP response headers (such as cache-related headers) returned by the website.

This inspection is performed only after explicit user interaction and is used solely to determine and display the cache status of the current page.

3. Permissions Usage Explanation

Varnish Indicator uses the following Chrome permissions:

activeTab

Used to temporarily access the currently active tab after a user clicks the extension icon. This allows the extension to inspect the page's response headers. Access is limited to the active tab and is not persistent.

webRequest

Used to read HTTP response headers (for example, cache status headers) in order to determine whether the page is served from Varnish cache. No request or response data is modified.

webNavigation

Used to detect page reloads or navigation events so the extension can update and display accurate cache information.

4. Data Storage

Varnish Indicator does not:

  • Store user data locally or remotely
  • Maintain logs or history
  • Use cookies, local storage, or indexed databases

All processing is done in memory and discarded immediately after use.

5. Data Sharing

Varnish Indicator does not share any data with:

  • Third-party services
  • Analytics platforms
  • Advertising networks
  • External APIs

No data ever leaves the user's browser.

6. Third-Party Services

This extension does not integrate with or depend on any third-party services, scripts, or remote code execution.

7. User Control and Transparency

  • The extension runs only when the user interacts with it
